Digital Signage

What Is Digital Signage? A Complete Introduction

YAXI TV Editorial Team · March 10, 2026 · 9 min read

Digital signage is the use of networked screens to display dynamic, remotely managed content in public or commercial spaces. It has replaced static posters and printed menus in thousands of businesses — and it now powers a multi-billion dollar advertising ecosystem.

The Basic Definition

Digital signage refers to displays — typically flat screens, video walls, kiosks, or outdoor LED panels — that show content delivered and managed over the internet. Unlike a TV playing cable, digital signage content is controlled through a content management system (CMS) that allows business owners or operators to upload images and videos, build playlists, schedule content by time of day, and push changes to screens instantly without physically touching the device.

How It Works

A digital signage setup consists of four layers: a display screen, a media player device (like an Amazon Fire TV Stick or Android TV box), a cloud-based content management system, and a network connection. Content flows from the CMS to the media player, which renders it on the screen in real time.

Why Digital vs Static

Digital signage enables instant content updates, scheduling (dayparting), and programmatic advertising revenue that static displays cannot generate. For venue owners, this transforms a passive display asset into an active revenue stream.
